Messages being automatically marked as read...

Crash Fistfight

Xp Pro, Outlook XP, & Exchange 2003.
When new messages arrive, after a few minute - maybe as long as 5,
they will become marked as read.
All the options for marking as read have been un-checked in
Tools>Options.
User also has a Treo set to sync with Exchange server, but isn't
opening messages in question on Treo.
No Google desktop installed, either (I read that can be a cause of
ths, too).
Any suggestions?

YEs, I was mentioning the treo in the event that might have anything
to do with it.
