messages are deleted automatically after reading

After opening a message and reading it, I click the "next message" arrow to
read the next one. Outlook automatically deletes the message I just read and
it is not in my "deleted" file afterward - it is completely gone. How can I
turn this off.
 
Sounds like you might have a view/filter set to hide read items. Take a
peek under View > Arrange By > Current View. (You can always start Outlook
1 time with the /cleanviews command line switch to delete all custom views
and reset the default views back to a first run condition.)
