message when booting on notebook with xp home

hi

My friend has an acer notebook that gets the following message when her
boots ""We apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start
successfully...."

reagrdless of the choice he makes he continues to get to this screen

Do i need to do a repair from his xp cd and if so, how should i do that?

It's probably caused by malware.
