I bought a Windows XP Proffessional CD for my Laptop, via Amazon, from the
seller, 'software-trader', for which I paid £79.99 +£3.23pp. Shortly
thereafter the Laptop was broken beyond repair.
I then bought a refurbished Laptop which arrived with XP already installed
and with the instuctions that the programme was installed just for testing
purposes and should be replaced.
I therefor used the XP CD that I had bought for my, now defunct, original
Laptop.
This seemed to work OK, until recently when I accepted a security download
from Microsoft. Now, everytime I go online, I am cursed with the message "
this software is illegal".
When I tried to get help from Microsoft, I was informed that I did not
qualify for assistance.
I tried to contact the seller via the link on the receipt from Amazon, to no
avail. I then told Amazon about the problem and asked them for an address.
They informed me that as it had gone past the 60 days, they could not assist
me.
I am retired and spend much time with my Laptop, to keep me occupied. As a
Pensioner, I really can't afford to buy another copy of the aforementioned,
therefor
any helpfull advice would be appreciated.

Unfortunately - for you - it sounds like you went through all the proper
channels.

You bought an OEM copy (which is supported only by the original
installer/those who sold it to you - part of the licensing) from a
"questionable" reseller. They "took you for a ride" and you found out later
that it was not legitimate. (In other words - your copy of Windows XP is
likely not legitimate.)

Does your laptop have a sticker with a CD key on it?

I don't recommend doing this (nor do I know if it works) - but I *can* use
Google and find things - so I thought I would share - since it was asked.

Many thanks to those who responded to my query, especially Shenan Stanley and
kurttrail.
Being not very knowledgeable about Computors, I attempted the suggested
recommendations with trepidation and, heyho, it seems to have been
successfull.
What really bugs me though, is the fact that, not only did the "ripoff"
merchants (listed on the receipt from Amazon as software-trader), get away
with £80 + of my Pension, plus how ever many others have been and still are
being succered, but also the fact that, Amazon, which I thought to be an
honest website, would not do anything to help me.
Thanks again to all.
