message not sent

I keep getting the message below when I try to send emails. The emails are
sent out anyway but below keeps popping up. Also when I close WIndows Mail
it asks if I want to mail the messages in the outbox. There are no messages
in the outbox.
What gives? How to remove this tick?

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'mailto:p[email protected]'. Subject

Gary, I cannot correct the mailto part because I have no pending email to
send to this person. This email address is not in the outbox or anywhere
else. Joanna

The recipient's email address format is not correct. Remove the "mailto:"

Does this problem happen when sending to other recipients?
Try this: Delete that mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate
the account.
