Trying to reply to an email address I've used hundreds of times, I now get
the message in the subject line. The intended recipient is a Hotmail acct;
my email to other addresses goes through. Nothing at Hotmail suggests a
problem, and the recipient assures me she does not have a full inbox. I can
send her mail from another account.

And if I try to send a new email (not a reply), Outlook's autofill doesn't
find her name and address as it used to (and as it does other names and
addresses). I've checked the contact data in Outlook and everything seems to
be in order. What might be up?

Yes to both. Moreover, I get an error message when I use my ISP's web client
to send to the same address, but not to others. Error reads: "The following
addresses had fatal errors:
[email address]: 550 permit denied"

Well, Hotmail's servers have been known to have trouble from time to time,
so I wouldn't be real quick to blame Outlook. Wait a day or two.
And if I try to send a new email (not a reply), Outlook's autofill
doesn't find her name and address as it used to (and as it does other
names and addresses).

The autocompletion cache can contain only 1,000 entries. Perhaps her name
has been removed. If you send a new message to her, it should get readded.

The autocompletion cache is not tied to your Contacts folder in any way.
