merge help - not mail merge

In Word 2000 we were able to use a "merge" button on the toolbar to import
data from a non-Microsoft database into an existing template. We did not have
to pick the incoming data from an existing document. The data was imported
directly into the template and then the "merge" function was used. They have
upgraded us to XP and we can not find 2000's "merge" button. We see the "mail
merge" and "compare and merge document" functions but those are not what we
need.

Can anyone help us?

What I think you are describing is indeed mail merge - see if
