I have menus/toolbars on the top and sides of my desktop. There are times
when I close a dialog box of some kind and immediately go to one of the side
toolbars the desktop hangs/freezes for 15 seconds or so. Then all is fine. I
have run, and do run often, SpyBot, SpySweeper, AdAware and Norton AV as well
as RegSupreme and RegClean. I have several other utilities that I run from
time to time as well. All are kept current. This has been going on for
several months - before and after SP2. Is there a Registry setting that is at
fault? Or?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you mean Common Tasks? or application windows.

Desktop hangs/freezes/right-click issues are usually caused by a shell extension. Try disabling Spysweeper shell integration in options.

I have Control Panel as a Toolbar on the top, and one Toolbar on the sides of
the desktop. I have apps in one and games in the other. They are small icon,
auto hide. These are the toolbars you create when you drag an icon to the
side of the desktop.

Additional Clarification:
The side toolbars hang open/displayed after I close and application and
immediately go to the toolbar to open an app. And the the desktop icons flash
and go to the default look. After the 15 seconds or so all is returned to
normal. Hope this is a little more clear - not always easy to describe.

Try line 157: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you are thinking this is more an icon cache issue:

Icon Cache is located here:

IconCache.db
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data

To clear and reset icon cache:

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Advanced. Use the item
drop box and choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. Ok your way
out.

Increase Icon Cache (Line 121)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Tip:

Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View (Line 166)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

/taskbarplus!.htm

Thank yo for the info. I installed the iconcache.reg and it did not cure the
problem, but so far, it appears that the disablerefresh.reg did. The first
one I chose was the vbs, but there were lots of warnings about VBS scripts. I
am sure it was OK, but I fell to the side of extreme caution and did not
install.

Thanks again!!
