First of all you are confused between memory (RAM - Random Access Memory)
and Hard disk Space.
In very simple terms, whatever is in RAM disappears when you switch off the
computer, whatever is stored on your Hard Disk drive does not.
To find out how much DISK space you have left, go to My Computer,
right-click on the C drive and choose Properties. That will tell you how
full your Hard Disk is.

To add to Gordon's post, You do not want to free up RAM, free RAM is wasted
RAM

Free RAM is NOT wasted RAM. It is simply not being used at the moment.

My point being (because you couldn't figure it out) freeing up RAM that is
in use will generally not get you improved performance, maybe the opposite.

Shoulda said that in the first post. What you DID say needed more
than "figuring it out", it required the reader to have a crystal ball
available. Unfortunately, mine is in the shop for a tuneup.

It's a pretty straight forward statement, unless your bored and want to
argue about something.

First of all, you are mixing up two very different things. Space on a
hard drive is called "storage" or "disk space." It's usually measured
in large numbers of GB, and you apparently have a 250GB hard drive.

Memory is RAM. It's the temporary work space your computer uses for
everything it does. It's usually measured in MB or small numbers of
GB. You say you have "356 ram." I assume you mean *256*, not "356,"
and that it's 256MB.

Now that that's clear (I hope) please clarify exactly what you want
more of, and why you want it. What do you want to use it for? Do you
need more space to store pictures? On an internal drive, or is
external OK? Or do you want something else?

Also how big is your internal hard drive? How full is it.

Straight forward??????????

When I click start>control panel>sys.>sys. properties this is what i
get "amd duron 1.60GHz 352mb. of ram".Then in my
computer>c:Drive>properties i have 5.47 gb of used space and 2.55 gb
of free space.I have checked for virus and spyware and remove some big
mb. programs that i dont use and my p.c. still seems slow and also i
install an external hard drive to put all my pic. files in.My pc still
seems slow .do you have any suggestions. Thanks Twistedmoon

You almost certainly have 384MB of RAM, and don't have a separate
video card. So 32MB of your RAM is used for video purposes.

You have a 9GB hard drive. That's absolutely tiny these days. How old
is the computer?

Is C: your only drive. Look in "My Computer" to see if there is
another partition or partitions, with other drive letters, that you
are perhaps unaware of and not using.

I have checked for virus and spyware

How? Exactly what software did you use to check?

and remove some big
mb. programs that i dont use

Doing that saves disk space, but doesn't affect the speed of the
computer.

and my p.c. still seems slow

How slow? I know it's hard to measure, but give us idea of what you
mean. Is it slow to boot? Slow to run after it boots? How long do some
things take?

What applications do you run? Is it slow only when running some
applications? Which ones?

You started by asking how to get more memory, but you apparently meant
more disk space. Now you're talking about the computer's speed. These
are *not* the same thing.

Please answer *all* the questions above.

"It seems slow after it boots" is extremely unspecific.

With so little information, I can't be specific either, but here are
some general things to try:

1. Defrag
2. Disk Cleanup
3. Go to MVP Malke's malware removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and
follow the instructions there.
