Memory / Windows Shell Error

The following error is generated (on a Dell Dimension 8300 running Win XP Pro
SP2 + latest updates) every time the Network Neighbourhood icon is
double-clicked on the desktop:

"The instruction at 0x7ca3622c referenced memory at 0x00000012. This memory
could not be read."

The Application Error event details are:
Type: Error
Category:None
Event ID: 1000
"Faulting application explorer.exe version 6.0.2900.2180, faulty module
shell32.dll version 6.0.2900.2763 fault address 0x00076243."

I ran the Dell diagnostics on this machine expecting it to detect a memory
or hard drive error but every test passed (i.e. memory, hard drive,
processor, etc). There are no obvious signs of any Windows corruption either
- the System Error log is clean and the machine is otherwise functioning
normally.

Can anyone give me any advice on how to troubleshoot this problem?

Are you using Norton Ghost?

How many drives / partitions? Where is pagefile.sys located?

Thanks for your reply Gerry. I don't understand the significance of the
questions but the answers are:

Norton Ghost isn't being used. There is one hard drive divided into two
partitions, C:and F: The pagefile is in the root of the C: drive.

I forgot to mention above that this machine has been problem free since it
was set up about 18 months-2 years ago.

Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System
File Checker (Sfc.exe)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310747

After doing this reboot the computer,

How many other computers on the Network? What are you trying to
access on the Network?

Are there any other Warning / Error Reports in Event Viewer
shortly before or after the problem occurs? If yes please post copies.

Thanks Glenn but this didn't resolve the problem.

Thanks also to Glen again, the SFC didn't pick up anything. I'm not trying
to view anything in particular on the network at the point at which the
problem occurs, I'm just double-clicking Network Neighbourhood to open it up.
There are 5 computers on the (Workgroup) network.

What activity is showing in Task Manager?

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
image name producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

I got this problem earlier today. Resolved it by logging as admin,
opening hodden NetHood folder of the original user(c:\documents amd
settings\<original user>\NetHood), and deleting all network places that
pointed to non-existing shares. Logged off, logged on under original
user account, and everything worked great.
