Memory Upgrade & W2K Reinstall Questions

Hi Everyone,

Since my last two posts: Layperson Has Multiple Issues & For Dave Patrick on
November 5th, I have researched upgrading the memory for my Dell OptiPlex
GX200 running Windows 2000 SP4 with NT Technology.

I currently have 128MB RAM (184-pin RIMM, PC800, ECC, Unbuffered)
upgradeable to 1G. My excitement faded once I saw the price points. On
Dell's Community forum, I read it is possible to upgrade by combining a 256MB
RAM with the existing 128MB so long as I place the 256 in the front slot. I
posted there with more hardware related questions, but would appreciate any
recommendations from the Technet Community.

Here is the big question:

Is it possible for me to procure a Windows 2000 reinstallation CD from
anywhere? It is no longer available through Dell and I have had no luck with
Microsoft for replacement anything on their factory installed products.

I would like to have OS recourse in the event something goes wrong with the
memory upgrade - and, the kind, Dave Patrick recommended a fresh install
after upgrading the memory.

As always, I appreciate and value your expertise.

Cheers,
-

You could source Win2k cd via Ebay or a supplier that deals with 'old'
software,
likewise have you checked Ebay for Rimm?
Personnally I've never had to reinstall win* when upgrading memory, which
I've done many times.

I don't remember all of the details but IIRC there were indications of
operating system corruption hence the suggestion.

Hi DL & Dave Patrick,

I apologize for the late reply to your posts - catastrophe struck.

The hard drive on my GX200 blew out within an hour of my post and I am just
now making it to an internet cafe.

With no reinstall CDs in hand, it makes no sense to replace the hard drive.
This circumstance also renders the memory upgrade mute.

Thank you for your assistance and guidance. I truly appreciate your help.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Cheers,
