Is there a program that runs from a floppy that I can use to check what
*type* of memory chip my friend has in his pc?
I know I/he can take the case off and look, but in his case this will be
the 'if all else fails' option.

I have not tried myself, but try aida16:

Aida16 v.2.12 **
AIDA16 is a DOS text-mode system information program.
It extracts details of all components of the PC.
It can display information on the screen or write it to file.
AIDA16 offers command-line switches and Windows DOS prompt support.

AIDA32 works on mine so it should work on my friend's.
