Will Vista Home Premium recognize more than 2GB of ram?

The local computer guys says no which seems strange to me.

Yes. 32-bit Vista, regardless of which edition, can recognize
somewhere between 3 and 4GB. All 32-bit versions of Windows (XP as
well as Vista), even though they have a 4GB address space, can only
use *around* 3.1GB of RAM. That's because some of that space is used
by hardware and not available to the operating system and
applications. The amount you can use varies, depending on what
hardware you have installed, but is usually around 3.1GB.

You don't say where you found your local computer guy, but it sounds
like you might want to look for someone better informed.

SP1 release notes say that Vista32 will now report up to a full 4GB.

Yes, it will recognize up to 3.2 gb or thereabouts of RAM. Not all
computers will take more than 2gb of RAM, however.

Vista will see a little over 3gb if 4gb is installed, but no individual
32bit application will use more than 2gb..

Thanks for the quick response.

There are 32 bit applications that can use more than 2 GB if
the /3GB switch is enabled. FSX is one of them. With
add-ons FSX is bumping up against the 2GB barrier. Even
if the switch is not used, having more than 2GB is useful
because applications will not have to share that 2GB with
the OS, which will then have its own space above the 2GB
boundary.

All the 32-bit Vista systems, along with other 32-bit systems. have a
32-bit or 4GB address space. Some of that address space must be used
to access your video board, BIOS, etc. Therefore a 32-bit system will
not actually be able to use an entire 4GB of RAM. You'll probably be
able to see 3GB or so. See http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html

That's not quite true as Linux has an expanded memory option which enables
up to 64gb although the 4gb limit per task remains.

Yes it will recognise more than 2GB of RAM so your local computer guy is
wrong. Currently, however, if you install 4GB of RAM Vista will only show it
as 3GB or thereabout. Service Pack 1 for Vista does rectify this problem
though and if you installed 4GB, Assuming your motherboard would accept 4GB,
then Vista with SP1 should recognise the 4GB.

The Systen properties will show 4GB of installed RAM with SP1, but only the
3GB or so will be useable by Windows, as it is now. SP1 doesn't magically
create additional address space!

If they lifted the limitation they have in the pae kernel, it could have.

Was he talking about Vista or the computer? For instance, my daughter has an
older Presario SR20202NX. It has 2 memory slots, and can only recognize 2GB
of RAM. My Aspire has 4 slots and can recognize 4GB. They will only
recognize memory sticks of certain capacity. Like mine, I can't pop in 4GB
sticks to kick mine to 16GB. Running the scanner from Crucial Memory, it'll
will say something like this...

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2
PC2-8500 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

If he meant Vista. Do like the other posters have said and find another
tech..:)
