Memory question in Vista

Seems like its not PC to diss anybody but the truck drivers who make sure
the grocery stores stay full, etc., etc. That's one of my pet peeves.

It makes me sick when anyone disses anyone over what they do for a living.
It isn't the job that maketh the person.

I agree with others: try pulling the 512MB of PC2100 and see if things speed
up or slow down in the WEI. Other than WEI, does the system perform
acceptably? No crashes?

The machine is fine it just gets a low score in Vista and it does seem a bit
choppy in Vista. I'll pull the 512MB out and report back.

With the 512 and the 1GB in I get the following

WEI Mem op per sec 3.2
Sisoft Sandra int score of 1729MB/s
Sisoft Sandra float score of 1749MB/s

With just the 1GB in I get.

WEI Mem op per sec 4.1
Sisoft Sandra int score of 2241MB/s
Sisoft Sandra float score of 2106MB/s

That's a fair bit of difference. Does it feel any better?

Specifically, does it feel 70quid for another gig of PC3200 better!

Out of interest, what is your memory usage?

Cheers - Jaimie

It does feel better actually. My memory useage at the mo' is 820MB. I've
been wondering if the £70 will be worth it. I think it probably will be.

This is because with the slower 512 MB memory removed, it will operate at
the higher speed of your 1 GB module(s).

This base unit and therefore the mobo is nearly 4 years old. Might be due
an upgrade!

I know, thanks for ponting that out!

Probably so, if you're that close to the 1gig mark as it is. I
certainly feel more comfortable with 1.5gig than 1gig.

Yeah I'd say I have but I've just moved into my first house in the last 6
months and it makes you differentiate between need and want more than I ever
have. I want a new PC/mobo/whatever I don't need one ;-(

Well, there you go! I'd rather run at your 1GB numbers than your 1.5GB
numbers.

And 1GB should be sufficient if you're not using apps that require huge
chunks of memory like PhotoShop or VM's. I mean, more is almost always
better when it comes to RAM (except with mismatched pairs, as you've
discovered) but the budget doesn't always allow for ad-hoc upgrades. At
least not 'round these parts.

At any rate, you've better numbers and performance for the moment. Congrats!

I do do the VM thing though as I work in I.T and have 2k3 servers etc
floating about for testing ;-(

Should've gone to 2gig ages ago, then! My 2gig MacBook is a joy for
running VMs on, while on the 1.5gig minitower it uses up an annoying
amount of RAM.

I'm mildly surprised you're using Vista on your workstation, since it
also eats up an annoying amount of RAM - I tend to use Win2k or Linux
for my VMware host machines, for that sub-100meg memory footprint. I
guess the hardware is primarily a Vista workstation, so you don't
really have that option.

I'm just using Vista due to my need to be an expert on it as soon as. I'd
probably stick with XP if I could.

Kinda off topic, but what the hell... we're using VMWare Virtual
Infrastructure (VI) in my group and it is way cool. I can VPN into the lab
and access VM's running in VI without having to mess with hw. Very nice.
Some limitations, of course, but still, very cool.
