Memory question in Vista

RCE Defiant

My vista machine has a Base Score of 3.2 in Vista. I have a 3Ghz P4 with
1.5 GB RAM. The lowest thing in my rating in Vista is the memory operations
per second. I've got 512MB of PC2100 and 1GB PC3200. I think the 2100
memory is casuing me issues. Does anyone know what the speed diff is
between these sorts of memory and also does anyone think it's worth me
ripping the 512 out for another 1GB of 3200?

The lower speed memory will be slowing the whole memory bus down to
266MHz, rather than the 400MHz that the faster memory is capable of.
But does your motherboard support 400MHz?

If it doesn't, leave it as is.

If it does, then check your normal memory usage in Task Manager,
Performance tab. You'll may get better results just by pulling the
512meg out, unless you normally have over a gig of Total Commit
Charge.

Adding another gig of higher-speed memory is never a bad thing, except
on the wallet.

I agree with Jaimie, you may be better off just removing the slower 512 MB
memory, leaving your system with the remaining 1 GB. Give that a try and
see what happens. Only takes a little time and has no impact on your
wallet.

Clue: 2100 is roughly 2/3 of 3200.

And people call truck drivers stupid.

That score seems quite low even for that ram. I have 2GB of ram all running
in PC2700 mode and I get a 4.9 on Vista x64.

With that said, I would look at chipset drivers, BIOS updates, and possibly
a new motherboard. Your motherboard's memory performance might just be that
bad.

It is quite an old board now. MS-6577 but that score does seem super sucky.

I am getting:

4.1 memory Operations per Second with 1 gig of DDR 3200
3.9 Calculations Per Second with an AMD 3000+ 64 Bit CPU
2.8 Desktop Performance to Windows Aero *(256 DDR Nvidia AGP Card)
2.6 Business and Gaming Graphics Performance *(Ditto on the Video Card)
5.4 Disk Data Transfer Rate
MSI K8MM-V Mainboard
80 GB HDD with XP Pro
100 GB HDD with Vista

Running a 1gb Kingston Thumbdrive for Ready Boost

Christ I was only joking he said "and they call truck drivers stupid" and I
said "no they call truck drivers thick" subtely implying that he was thick.
I didn't really mean that they call truck drivers thick (I`ve never heard
anyone say that) and I have the upmost respect for truck drivers so there's
no need to get all shirty and say "No they call truck drivers employed" I
guess I claim a whoosh!

lmfao :)

You got any units to go with your top-posting?

Ignore the units question. This is the Vista reporting tool, right? No
units, just scores. Thanks, MS.

I'm surprised. It's pretty common. We're regarded as lower than shelf
stackers.

Seems like its not PC to diss anybody but the truck drivers who make sure
the grocery stores stay full, etc., etc. That's one of my pet peeves.
