Memory problems with my P4C800-E Deluxe?

I have a very strange problem with the memory modules I bought from you last
summer. I purchased them on the 11th of June 2003, and received them a few
days later. In December I changed my old memory modules and installed the
ones I bought. Since then I got nothing but trouble. Every now and then the
computer reboots or freezes. Every time I open more than 2 programs the
system reboots or crashes. If I try to copy a DVD the system simply reboots
or crashes. If I open my e-mail program (Outlook) and if I try to edit a
document with my word processor (Word Xp) the same thing happens.

After consulting my friends I downloaded a memory test program called
MemTest86+ which told me that my modules are loaded with bad addresses,
errors and bad memory parts.

My question is very simple. What can you do to help me? The modules I use
are "1GB Kit DDR RAM PC3200 Mushkin Level2, Dual Channel optimized".

P.S.: I don't know if it is of any help, but my system is the following: MB
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe, 300W Enermax Power Source, Chieftec Dragon Midi Tower,
Pioneer 106-D DVD-R/W, Liteon 51X24X52 CD-R/W, LiteOn 52X CD-Rom, WD 60 GB
7200 rpm with 8MB cache, Ati 9600 Pro graphics adapter without fan, 4
Noiseblocker 80 mm fan's, Thermalright SLK800-U with an 80 mm fan and an
Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 800 FSb processor.

Since I had many problems with viruses I do not include my real e-mail
adress. Sorry :(

I had problems with a mushkin memory module, and after contacting mushkin,
they replaced it very promptly. After that, my P4C800 DLX ran without
problems. I suggest you do the same.

Check the memory timing with something like aida32:

http://aida32.hu/aida-showshot.php?shot=shot12.gif

Compare the listed timings (TCAS, TRCD, TRP) to the specs listed
for your memory.

You could try, for example, setting TCAS to 2.5, to see if the
memory will settle down. If changing the timings doesn't make
any improvement, then use the warranty.

Pull all extra optical drives (and other bits you don't need for memory
testing) out to remove the possibility that your PSU is overloaded /
underpowered and follow the advice given. The optical drives don't add up to
a lot when idle but it does all add up.

It does sound like memory problems, but overloaded PSU won't help either -
especially if you get a new set of ram chips and are faced with the same
issues.

Hi there,

the memory timings I use are the default values for this board! 2.5,2,2,6
(if I´m not mistaken).

I will make a second test as suggested by TIM. Maybe it is an over/under
powered PSU.

Thanks

Hi,

I followed the tips that Tim and Paul gave me, but the memory errors are
still there!

One strange thing happend after I reconnected all the drives and usb cables
to the board. After booting the pc the following message appeared: System
could not overclock. F1 to enter setup or F2 to use default values and
continue.
And after that it didn´t recognize the hard drive the DVD-RW and the CD-RW.
Only after reseting the bios for the 3rd time resolved the problem.

Set the Memory timings at 2.5,3,3,6 and see if the problems persist. I have
Mushkin Level 2 ram and it won't run in my P4C800-E Dlx at its rated speed
(the Mushkin site even stated this when I bought it.) I run mine at 2,2,3,6
or 2,3,2,6 ( I can't recall right now.) Just relax the timings and see if
the problems go away. Then adjust them one at a time until the problem
returns. Back off the timings to regain stability and call it a day.

Hi,

including Your precious help and after contacting Mushkin who told me the
following:

********************* SOLUTION ************************
In the BIOS, under Advanced -> JumperFree Configuration:

* Set AI Overclock Tuner to Manual.
* Set Performance Mode to Auto.
* Set DDR Reference Voltage to 2.65V.

Also go to Advanced -> Chipset:

* Make sure the Performance Acceleration Mode is set to AUTO.

Reboot, if that doesn't help try raising the DDR Reference Voltage to 2.75.
If you still have instability problems try raising the DDR Reference Voltage
to 2.85.
********************************************************

All problems dissapeared. Since March the 25th I am a happy guy with a good
PC :)

Thanks
