Sometimes my PC (at boot and also within Control Panel) reports that I only
have 256Mb - but I actually have 512Mb (on two memory modules). The PC boots
OK irrespective but runs very slowly when it thinks it has 256Mb. What could
cause this? Cheers.

It sounds as though your RAM may not be not making a good electrical
contact, and that thermal expansion may result in the electrical contact
"coming and going." Examine the contacts and reseat the RAM firmly. On the
other hand, one of your RAM sticks may be defective.

Download and run Memtest86 to test your RAM. You will need to make a
bootable floppy. Read the instructions.
