Memory Dump

R

Ron Gaynor

My computer goes blue screen frequently. The message starts out:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer"

The nest lines say:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

The machine then does a memory dump, whatever that is, and after a minute or
so, restarts.

Any ideas what the problem is; hardware or software?

I run XP Pro on a 4 year old homemade (Tiger Direct Components) machine

Thanks,

From my experience, I'd say it is hardware fault. Most likely, faulty memory
module (SIMM, DIMM).

*Probably* Hardware - specifically RAM. The non-paged area is used for
central and critical parts of the system that must *never* be paged out
to the page file. Such things are unlikely to have errors that would
generate this message. Some third party utility items - notably Norton
- put some of their components in there, so if you have anything of that
sort try disabling it so it does not load. And then a good Memory
tester, eg memtest from www.memtest86.com - make its boot floppy then
boot it to run tests overnight
