I am getting a "Memory Access Violation in Module Kernel32" error upon
bootup. I am running XP Home. The computer is running quite slow. Any
thoughts as to what is causing this?

Hello,

It sounds like the Swen virus.

As of 9/19/2003, a new virus dubbed W32.Swen.A@mm was found. This virus has
a
number of symptoms. The most visible ones are:
-disables registry editing tools
-periodically displays a dialog "MAPI32 Exception" that asks for name, email
address, pop3 server, SMTP server, username, and password
-intercepts execution of programs and displays a "Memory access violation in
module Kernel32 at <address>" with a title of "Error occurred". The address
is variable.

Full details are on symantec's website:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Removal can be difficult, there are instructions on that same page.

I was having a similar problem with XP Home. I used the
Download Windows Memory Diagnostic tool from
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Hope this helps.

I think there may be some confusion here between software "memory access
violations" and hardware memory problems. The former are much much more
common than the latter.

The quoted microsoft page below deals with a standalone hardware memory
diagnostic that can be used to detect hardware memory problems.

Software "memory access violations" are just an expression of a software
problem (software problems like this are sometimes side effects of busted
hardware - like busted NIC cards or video cards or disk controllers). If
you can post some additional details - the exact full text of the message
you are getting - and some partuculars about your PC then someone may be
able to help you. Also, what has changed recently on your PC?

Those are typical of the Swen Worm.
A cleanup utility is available if you go to
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virus.aspx?ID=36939
and in Characteristics, Cleaning Utility available, click the 'please

Do that on an uninfected machine. Extract the ClnSwen.com and
FixSwen.inf files from it, put them on a floppy, set that to be write
protected, then on the infected machine

First on the infected machine, right click on the FixSwen.inf and take
Install. It will remove registry entries that may prevent the 'Clean'
program from running. Then run ClnSwen.com
