Memo to Microsoft: Fix Control Panel

All of a sudden I'm having a problem with Control Panel. When I try
to launch it, I see the outline of a window appear for a split second,
and then it disappears, and nothing happens.

Did a google search and apparently a lot of people are seeing this
problem, and have been seeing this problem since the alpha version of
Vista. I've got SP1 installed, so apparently Microsoft still hasn't
fixed the problem. How pathetic.

Hi,

From what research I've done for others on this problem appears to be
graphic card driver issues. Have you recently updated your drivers?

Here is one of many links that may help you......

this problem is present only on pirated copies of Vista due crack OEM Bios
emulation and/or license service not running.
Buy a genuine copy of Vista and your problem will be solved!

I strongly disagree ! I purchased a new PC with Vists O/S last week and am
having the SAME problem

It would depend on the source of your 'new PC'. Any system a week old is
going to be under some form of warrantee. Any of the well known OEM system
makers can solve that problem in an e-mail or 2. This newsgroup can't fix
your "Authentication" error, but you can bet an OEM with a rep on the line
will fix it post haste.

I saw this problem after installing the IDT audio update the beginning of
this month. This was along with the other problems the update caused. I
had to use system restore to correct all of the problems.

Call Dell and tell them they are selling pirated copies of Vista then.

Yeah I found the workaround that says you have to open up the services
panel and stop the Software Licensing service (which will also stop
the ReadyBoost service), and then restart the ReadyBoost service
(which will also restart the Software Licensing service).

But it would be nice if Microsoft actually fixed the problem, instead
of us having to do workarounds. I can't believe this has existed
since the alpha versions, and it still hasn't been fixed yet.

Looks like the problem is not confined to Control Panel.

I just tried launching Chess Titans, and nothing happened. So I tried
launching Control Panel, and nothing happened. So I did the
workaround with restarting the Software Licensing/ReadyBoost services,
and now both Chess Titans and Control Panel can open.

Looks like these problems were fixed in SP1. Thanks Dell for failing
to install SP1 on the computer, even though I ordered it 6 weeks after
SP1 was released. And thanks Microsoft for not showing SP1 whenever I
checked Windows Update.
