Opening control panel

All of the sudden control panel will not open. No document will print to my
printers. Frankly I haven't seen a Windows as buggy as this one since
Windows 95.

At any rate it would be appreciated if somebody happens to know how to get
Vista to allow me into control panel.

I clicked on control panel, window begins to open and then disappears.

***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.


How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

***Startup Repair from the Vista DVD***

How to Use The Vista DVD to Repair Vista (Startup Repair is misnamed by the
Win RE team and it can be used to fix many Vista components even when you
***can boot to Vista):

If you elect to run Startup repair from the Vista DVD (it can fix major
components in Vista--I've verified this many many times; it's good for more
than startup problems, and the Win RE team simply screwed up when they named
it not understanding its full functionality):

It will automatically take you to this on your screen:

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on
thelower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list
and I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

The gray screen after you click the first link in the above pic will look

Click Startup Repair, the link at the top and after it scans>click OK and
let it try to repair Vista. It will tell you if it does, and if it
doesn't, try System Restore from the Recovery Link on the DVD. If these
don't work booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key and using System
Restore from one of the safe modes besides VGA may work. That means you
have the option to try 4 different safe modes to get to system restore, (one
from the Recovery link on the DVD) and sometimes one will work when the
others won't.


You could also try a Repair Install with Vista which is done exactly the
same way as in XP:

Well I finally got so frustrated that I simply hit the kill button.

When Vista rebooted both my printer and control panel seemed to be working
fine.

Like I may have said earlier Vista is full of bugs.

Thanks anyway. Probably tomorrow or the next day I'll have the same stupid
problems.

Control Panel will not open if the Software Licensing service (SLsvc.exe)
is not running.

Try this;

1) Launch services.msc from the Run box
or an elevated CMD prompt. Or, if you're
able to enter text into the search bar, just
enter services.msc there, and then press enter.
Be sure to okay any prompts for elevated privileges.

2) Find the Software Licensing service & stop it if it's running.
Then restart it. If it's not running, start it.
(it may say that ReadyBoost needs that service to run; stop it anyway, then restart it.)

3) Find the SLUI Notification service. It may be set on Manual
or Automatic. See if it is Started. If not start it.

If that is what was causing Control Panel not to open, then
your problem should now be fixed.

Guess who--

I don't take offense at criticism of Vista, and control panel problems have
been frequent on this group. If Ramesh's restore control panel icons which
also helps to restore access to the control panel doesn't work (there are
certainly workarounds when people don't have access to the control
panel--I've even made work arounds for people who are shutdown by Vista's
WGA to get their control panel use back) my question to you is how many of
the several specific remedies I gave you did you actually try?

Do you have a Vista DVD? So far we don't know.

Have you tried Startup Repair, a Repair Install, or any system restore
points?

What's the "Kill button"--you mean you wiped and reloaded? If you did you
could have fixed it with one of my methods, particularly if you got hold of
a Vista DVD which MSFT tries to make sure you don't get with the purchase of
OEM preloaded Vista on a new PC by forcing the OEMS not to give you one.
It's about greed not concern for their customers' recovery abilities. SP1,
now in Beta testing, has Win RE however.
