Meeting Request marked as Private

Accidentally sent out a Meeting Request with Private checked.

Is there any way of making it Public again without cancelling and resending?
What does Private actually do?
 
Private makes the details of the meeting invisible to others looking at your
calendar. They'll see that you're busy but not why

If you open the item on your calendar and uncheck the Private box, can you
then send an update to others.
