How does one get Mediaplayer Classic to play DVD's?
All I get is is this msg: "failed to query the needed interfaces for
DVD playback". Do I need additional software?

MPC supports DVDs. It has built-in MPEG2 decoder and AC3 plugin, so if you
have the latest version, it ashould play DVDs without problem.

I couldn't get it to work either, but then I have an older DVD (Toshiba)
which is no longer manufactured. I finally had to search around to find a
player for it that would work. It was so much hassle that I'd much rather
play them on my DVD Player. ;)

It was just a test anyway to see if a 5 year old DVD drive would still work.
It does, with limitations, but it does play CD's nicely.

I have noticed that on my pc it sometimes gives jumpy playback which was
corrected by setting priority to "high" (using the free "procexp.exe"
utility).

This might only be a problem on older pc's pcs like mine (which has an
"athlon xp1800+" processor).

Odd... when I have codec problems, MPC usually says "unable to render
all the pins in the graph". Try this: load your DVD while pressing
the [shift] key to suspend autoplay. Start MPC. Click "File | Open
File" (*not* "Open DVD"). Click the three little dots in the Open
dialog to browse folders. Find your way to the VIDEO_TS folder on the
DVD disk. Look for an .IFO file (pick any one), and open that file in
Media Player Classic. Does it play?

If it still doesn't play when opened directly, then maybe that disk
uses some type of copy protection that MPC can't handle. Have you
tried other DVDs?

Did your DVD drive come with any software? If so, will your disks
play in that program?

1) I had severe jerkiness in MPC when playing video files (not DVDs).
In "Options|Playback|Output|DirectShow Video" I changed from "VMR9
(renderless)" to "VMR9 (windowed)". That fixed it, although the help
says this may cause problems with subtitles.

2) In some flavors of Windows (NT-2K-XP I think), you can change the
priority of a running program by right-clicking the related "Process"
in Task Manager. To do this automatically every time you run the
program, you have to change the command in the shortcut for it: see
Windows help for "START command", or type "start /?" at a command
prompt.

No, I have only one :-(.

I may even have to use PowerDVD :-(.

BTW, which dll's does one need to play dvd's?

I have the same problem ("failed to query the needed interfaces for DVD
playback"). I tried many DVDs. It worked while I had WinDVD [OT]
installed and it does not work after deinstalling WinDVD - so I think it
uses an external codec?

as I wrote in the thread "for those looking for a dvd player" -

Thanks to all... it works now - I did not install anything and I did not
change any windows settings, but it works now. Great!
Maybe it was an older version ov MPC I used before? I don't know.
dvd.exe from the system32 directory still pop up the error 'no codecs
installed' but MPC works just fine.

greetings
