Media Test Failure at Bootup

Following a system crash I am unable to boot up my PC.
I get an error message from a 3com boot page that says: PXE-E61 Media Test
Failure, check cable. I am advised that this is the PC trying to boot from a
network or LAN. I have checked that the PC bios is telling the machine to
boot from the CDRom or Hard Drive only and there are no LAN boot options, but
it does not make any difference. I am unalbe to get the machine to read from
the operating system on either the hard drive or the XP disk. I have checked
the cables and connections. I do not know how to reset the bios or do
anything other than the basics.
Does anyone have any advice they can give me before I give in and take the
machine to the repairer centre?

No, you've done a really good job of troubleshooting so far. If you
tried to boot from the XP install disk as well as the hard drive and it
won't, then your motherboard has died.

The only advice I have is if you need to get data off the hard drive.
Slave the drive in a working machine and get your data off that way.
Otherwise, as you have concluded it is time to take the machine to the
shop.

Hi Malke,

If his motherboard has died, I sure would've been wasting his time. ;-(

Well, since he says he is sure the boot order is correct to boot from
the optical drive first and it won't and it won't boot from the hard
drive, the logical conclusion is that the fault lies in the m/b. Of
course, one never knows w/these posts.

But nothing you say is ever wasted - it's all good. ;-)

Keep up the good work!
