Media Player speeds up then slows down when watching mpeg, avi etc

My media player speeds up really fast, and then slows down to about half of
normal speed. The audio is unaffected and plays at normal speed, it is just
the video. I have run a spy removal program to get rid of the spyware and
updated my media player to version 10 and I am still having this problem.
What can I do??

You have probably set the buffer size too small. WMP, tools menu, options,
Performance tab.
