media player probs

hope someone can help! windows media player (v.9) has suddenly stopped
being able to play media files (music, videos etc). if i try to play an mp3
(say), i get a message saying "windows media player cannot play the file.
the file is either corrupt or the player does not support the format" ...
does anyone know what this means? files play fine using other apps
(jetaudio, quicktime etc), but i'd like the functionality of wmp. thanks
for any replies, tips etc!
