Media Player problem

Hi,

Everytime I hit the DELETE key that is located in the far lower right corner
of my keyboard, Windows Media Player keeps popping up. I have two delete
keys. The other delete key, which is the one nearer the center works near
the alphabets, works fine; Media player does not pop up when I use it for
deleting.

Why is this happening? (I am certain this was not happening before. Seems
as though it just started acting this way, and it is driving me nuts. If I
am connected to the internet, it wants to try to connect to Media Player
site.)

Is there any manner to prevent Media Player from popping up when I hit that
lower right delete key?

How can I deseleect Media player as my preferred play?

Thanks. Any help provided is appreciated.

PS I will, also, post this in the WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER GENERAL discussion
section.

Hi,

Control Panel/Keyboard, check your mapping for special commands. It sounds
as though you are referring to the "del" key that is part of the numberpad
which, when the numlock is on, functions as a period?

Hi,

Yes, the DELETE key that has the period above Del on the number pad. Even
with num Lock on, while it period appears so does stupid Media Player. It
keeps popping open.

I had already checked KEYBOARD in CONTROL PANEL, but there is no place there
that shows 'mapping' or anything for 'special commands'.

Is there a place in the registry where one can check what keys on the
keyboard are assigned to do a specific task? I deleted all internet files,
all temp files, all prefetch files, ran a registry clean, deleted files that
were created or modified in the last few days that appear non-essential, but
nothing has stopped Media player from doing this. Something has obviously
written code into to some file on my comuter that has caused this behavior to
start. I wish I could just deleted Media Player and reinstall it, but
Windows won't allow me to delete it. It just keeps rewriting the .exe file
everytime I hit the DELETE key.

I even did a SYSTEM RESTORE to over a week ago and that did not help. Does
your DELETE key on the number pad cause Media Player to execute when you hit
it?

Thanks.

Hi,

If you have a multimedia keyboard that has a key designed to open the media
player, I would speculate that you may actually be having a hardware problem
(meaning, the keyboard is shorting at some point).

Hello, Rick,

Thank you for your response, but it would help me eliminate possible sources
if the other questions I posed in my 2 messages were also answered. Every
little bit of understanding helps.

Thanks.

Hi,

Here's the thing: Multimedia keyboard software generally allows for mapping
of the speciality keys with a full set of supporting drivers. The DEL key in
the numberpad is not one of these and generally cannot be mapped. There are
also plenty of third party tools available which also allow you to remap
keys, but I don't get the impression you are using one of these. What's left
as a possibility is a hardware fault, and you can easily show this to be
true by trying a different keyboard (just borrow a friends).
