Media in Powerpoint (2003 or 2007)..

I was stunned to find that mpeg2 files, in fully compatible DVD format, will
not run in powerpoint via the insert media...instead I need to either embed
media player or URL link to a file for an external player.

Is this true? I have recoded into almost every possible mpeg2 format, and
absolutely nothing happens for playback except a brief flash.

If it is not clear, all of these files play perfectly in Windows Media
Players 9-11...I have 11 on this machine.

Finally,

Does anyone know of a video file format that will play on both Mac and PC
Powerpoint...that is, is interoperable?

Many thanks for insights.

Extremely useful response. Many thanks!

You are correct - MPG2 is not a format PPT accepts. Check here for a 1
page summary of how PPT and Movies work (and don't work):

When I have a multiplatform project I either use .wmv (nearly all Macs
have the plug-in to view) or MPEG1, which is truly universal.

It is impossible to embed video files into Powerpoint without external
programs.

They are either absolute or relative addressed depending on the way they are
inserted.

Using a third party utility or other method ruins the idea of
interoperability when you have no control over the set up you will be
presenting on.
