I have too files that seem harmless enough but are showing up all over my computer. They are specifically files named hpothb.dat and hpothb.tif. They seem to replicate themselves in existing files. They appear to contain no data and can be deleted only to continue showing up elsewhere. Any thoughts?

hp is a prefix commonly used by Hewlett-Packard in their own files for printers, scanners etc

Do you have any of their hardware or is your PC a HP

If not copy one of each of these to your My Documents folder and delete the rest. Should any application fail or warning message arise where this file is needed, copy it back to the original location.
