MDAC 2.8 Merge Module?

D

Damien

I've produced an MSI file, using Installshield Developer 8 (with SP2),
which includes the MDAC 2.8 Merge Module.

I am attempting to deploy my MSI file using Active Directory/Group
Policy. Whilst the application claims to install properly, I am
finding the the MDAC components are NOT being installed properly. I
have to go to Add/Remove programs and run a repair on the application
before it starts working (and when I run the repair, I see MDAC flash
up a progress dialog, so it's installing more files).

The merge module is configured to run in the execute sequence, with
reboot location set to 0 (since setting it to 1 seems to cause the
whole installation to hang).

The Software Installation is configured on the computer settings,
rather than the user settings.

Has anybody seen this, got any useful suggestions of where to search
for more help, etc. This has been driving me mad for about a week now,
and I'm getting sick and tired of rebuilding the test machine.

Cheers for any help, and apologies in advance if you feel I'm posting
to the wrong group(s)

Okay, simpler question - does anybody have any ideas why questions
about installing MDAC like this (I can see several from the past using
Google Groups) always seem to go unanswered?

Am I just posting to completely the wrong groups (can't seem to find
any better ones), do people find a solution and never report it back
to the groups, or do they all just give up in the end?

It's incredibly frustrating to be asking what seem like simple
questions (Like "How do I get MDAC to silently install through Group
Policy"), and yet to never get any response.

Okay, I'll admit I am doing a bit of venting here, but still...

Damien.

Did you "repackage" the mdac installation into an msi, or did you get it
from an extraction point when executed the exe? or another way?

Hi Philip,

Sorry for the delay in replying - been away this weekend trying to set
a world record :)

Anyhow - the MDAC installation I'm using is a merge module - it is
provided as-is for inclusion into the MSI file, and was downloaded
from the InstallShield website
(http://saturn.installshield.com/objectgallery/mdac28/mdac28.zip). I
believe it is a microsoft approved mechanism for including MDAC in MSI
installations.

Have you got another method for packaging it that actually will work?
