MCSTRM system can't find file

B

biermanoski

Hi,

Following a freeze (pointer disappears but screen remains) I check in
Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewer> System> Message reads:

'The MCSTRM service failed to start due to the following error: The system
cannot find the file specified.'

Search Engine's links Real Player as the problem.

I did Install Real Player some time ago, but Unistalled it when this problem
began.

Unfortunately, the solutions on Real Player Message Board are varied and the
one which explains how to create a file in the Registry to substitute this
missing one is way over my head.

And I'm not Registry savy - though, I have deleted some folders - but do not
know how to create one.

Would greatly appreciate if someone could step by step Me into creating a
file in the Registry that would prevent my computer from often locking-up
from this MCSTRM thing.

First backup your registry using this tool which you can uninstall
later if desired:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

This file is associated with Rhapsody. The problem is the file itself
no longer exists, but is still referenced in the registry.

To remove the registry reference, open notepad and copy/paste these 2
lines of text into the window:

REGEDIT5
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MCSTRM]

Save the file to your desktop as del.reg, double click the del.reg
file and respond in the affirmative (Yes, OK) to the messages.

That will remove the reference from the registry so the missing file
no longer tries to load. Remove the del.reg file from your desktop
when you are done.

Reboot your system, check for issues.

Jose,

Greatly appreciated Your time & simiplied detailed explanation.

I understand the action that I took but can't give Your post an answer yet -
as it occurs frequently - but not everytime I use computer - and I don't use
computer every day: But I will give You a positive 'Yes' if My computer no
longer reports that message. So, check back in a month or two, ok?

I can't tell You how wonderful if will be if this solution works!

My Compaq Notebook is 6 years old and this is the only problem I had
recently and it robbed Me of 'Bragging Rights' about a 6 year old computer
working perfectly!

(ps) REGEDIT5 Registry Edit ? But what does the Nbr. 5 signify??

Thanks Much Again!

Oh my bad... got a bit confused there. After re-reading his post I see
now that he's wanting biermanoski to do this in notepad. I was thinking
he wanted him to do it in a cmd window... let's see, open mouth, insert
foot, chew vigorously... ;-)

NBD, we all overlook something sometime! ;-)

Jose,

Your Register String seems to have resolved that pesky MCSTRM message and
all the havoc/time spent because of it.

Can't thank YOU enough, Sir.

Again, Thank You,
Jean

ok, Jose, I'll try again - and then get back to You:  Today, spent much time
online but usually don't sometimes for days. Therefore, I won't know for
awhile.
BTW guys, Jean is a gal and not a guy. Although, in France, I'd be a guy if
I were a Jean, I think? :)))))
Thank you,
Jean

Jose,
Greatly appreciated Your time & simiplied detailed explanation.
I understand the action that I took but can't give Your post an
answer yet -
as it occurs frequently - but not everytime I use computer - and I
don't use
computer every day:  But I will give You a positive 'Yes' if My
computer no
longer reports that message. So, check back in a month or two, ok?
I can't tell You how wonderful if will be if this solution works!
My Compaq Notebook is 6 years old and this is the only problem I had
recently and it robbed Me of 'Bragging Rights' about a 6 year old
computer
working perfectly!
(ps) REGEDIT5   Registry Edit ? But what does the Nbr. 5 signify??
Thanks Much Again!

Hi,
Following a freeze (pointer disappears but screen remains) I
check in
Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewer> System>
Message reads:
'The MCSTRM service failed to start due to the following error:
The system
cannot find the file specified.'
Search Engine's links Real Player as the problem.
I did Install Real Player some time ago, but Unistalled it when
this problem
began.
Unfortunately, the solutions on Real Player Message Board are
varied and the
one which explains how to create a file in the Registry to
substitute this
missing one is way over my head.
And I'm not Registry savy - though, I have deleted some folders -
but do not
know how to create one.
Would greatly appreciate if someone could step by step Me into
creating a
file in the Registry that would prevent my computer from often
locking-up
from this MCSTRM thing.

Thank you,

First backup your registry using this tool which you can uninstall
later if desired:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
This file is associated with Rhapsody.  The problem is the file
itself
no longer exists, but is still referenced in the registry.
To remove the registry reference, open notepad and copy/paste these 2
lines of text into the window:
REGEDIT5
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MCSTRM]
Save the file to your desktop as del.reg, double click the del..reg
file and respond in the affirmative (Yes, OK) to the messages.
That will remove the reference from the registry so the missing file
no longer tries to load.  Remove the del.reg file from your desktop
when you are done.
Reboot your system, check for issues.
.
Change the REGEDIT5 to REGEDIT4 - my bad.
Reboot to be sure it is gone.
Are you sure about that?  What's the difference between regedit and
regedit4?  When I try entering regedit4 (or regedit5) in a cmd window, I
get an error message saying that Windows can't find the file.
Thats part of the .REG file header, not an executable. It indicatesthe
version of the regedit that was used.
How to add, modify, or delete registry subkeys and values by using a
registration entries (.reg) file

Glad to hear it and I've updated my notes accordingly.
