MCI Media player problem & others

I'm using a new laptop with PPT 2003 and Win XP Pro. Mpg-1 videos won't play
in existing PPT files. Mpg-1 videos inserted into a new PPT files created on
this machine will not play. I did the following:
In the laptop, I tweaked PPT and XP Pro according to rdpslides.cpm FAQ. I
went to SoniaColeman.com tutorials for multimedia. The Registry files on my
machine matched hers. I ran
mplay32.exe (MCI Media Player) and had the following problem: The video
loaded but when the play button was pressed, the video jumped to the end. I
tried 'rewinding' and repeating pressing the play button but the same
happened. The identical video and mplay32.exe work just fine on my desktop
configured in the same fashion. The video will play with
the Windows Media Player. I used G-spot to check the codecs and could find
no problem.

II. When I play a PPT or PPS file on my new laptop some inserted pictures
and/or background colors do not show up, text shows up OK usually on a black
background. If I run the same show 2 or more times, it will then run fine.
If I close the file and start again, I get the same no show of some inserted
pictures and background colors. I really would appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you

Try changing hardware acceleration. Go to http://www.pptfaq.com and put
Hardware Acceleration in the search box there. You'll get a list of FAQs -
you want number 129.

You never know, this might just help with the video issue, too.

Check the length of the path to the video. Make sure it's under oh, 100
characters.

I reset the acceleration to zero and worked up from there and still have the
same problem with the mplay32.exe. I tried it in Safe Mode and it still
jumps to the end. When I do set the acceleration to zero, I get a message
that the ATI drivers will not load . My laptop is a high performance fast
gaming type machine
with 1 G of Ram. My desktop is a fast Dell with 1 g Ram and all works as it
should.
I called the manufacturer of my laptop and described the problem and they
said "they will work on it". Do you have any other suggestions?
Interestingly, I have a very large and complex PPV Vox Proxy presentation
with MID audio, WAV audio using Chirag'sVolume Control and complex
animations. This works fine. But I don't have any video files in it.

I'm out of ideas.
