McAfee

For a number of years now I have been using the McAfee virus projection and
firewall software. Over the weekend I began to have serious problems with
my system. When I ran my McAfee virus protection program it detected 8
occurrences of the w32/BUGBEAR.b@MM virus. At that point I used the
Symantec software to kill the virus and also got the Microsoft security
patch to hopefully avoid further successful attacks. My question is:
should McAfee have prevented/detected/warned of the viruses in advance? I
can honestly say that the whole time I have had McAfee I can't really
remember a time when I have seen any evidence of a virus being detected or
eradicated. Maybe I'm just lucky? Any others' experiences with McAfee? Is
there a better product?

It likely would have had your definitions been up to date. As for
other products, there are better ones and worse ones depending upon
your individual needs.

It should but it all depends on two things. your configuration and your keeping the
software up to date with the three components; Kernel, Engine and DAT files. For example
if the software is NOT up to date and on-access is not enabled, then the detection and
removal of BugBear would not occur.
