McAfee VirusScan interfering with Windows startup

I have downloaded McAfee VirusScan Online twice. It
appears to be interfering with my system startup. I was
only able to startup in Safe Mode. I am now
using "Selective Startup", after going in to msconfig and
de-selecting three System Services files that were related
to McAfee. Now when I start the computer in normal mode,
in addition to the "Selective Startup" warning, I also get
a warning that ActiveShield has been disabled. I am
worried that I am disabling a file that needs to be
enabled in order for McAfee to work properly. However, I
am exhausted by the problems with startup (not to mention
all of the darn recent worm and virus problems!!!). Is
there anything I should change or do differently?

I have been trying to contact McAfee Tech Support since
last night. Their website seems to be overloaded - I
can't get through to the web pages needed to talk to a
support tech. That's why I thought I would try here.

Tammy,
You are perfectly fine to try here! From my past experience, McAfee has been
nothing less than a headache. I have removed McAfee and installed AVG on
several machines and the people I helped were more than happy with that.
Just my 2 cents.

Tammy, there's no problem with your posting here as there may be people with
McAfee installed who may be able to help. I certainly understand why you
posted here, I just wanted to make clear that it was there issue.

Since it really isn't doing you much good with Active Shield disabled, you
might want to try using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to
when you installed McAfee. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\System Restore.

There are other antivirus options out there. AVG is free and pretty good,
www.grisoft.com. There's also Etrust, it's not free, it's very good and
very light on the system. Very few report issues with it, I use it myself
and they have a free trial version you can test, http://www.my-etrust.com/.

McCrappy is a piece of garbage. My mother's workplace uses it, and gets
infected all the time. They've had to wipe their entire system twice now.
As well, hotmail's McCrappy scanner will tell me a file is clean, but when I
download it, Norton Anti-virus detects a virus in it.
Norton has better features, such as Symantec's Live Update- which
automatically updates your virus definitions.

Gee, my McAfee does updates too. And it detects viruses.
Maybe your mom's workplace IT guys don't know how to
configure VS.

How likely is that? I know many people who use McCrappy, and they all say
it's garbage, just like the guy who posted to you as well. You say you
haven't had any problems, the same could be for someone who doesn't have an
AV at all, they just don't download from untrusted sites. Try downloading
things off sites like Kazaa, and see how long it'll take before your
computer starts acting funny.
