McAfee Viruscan taking up processor space?

My wife's PC runs sluggish and mine runs fine. Both of us are using
Windows 2000. Both of us use McAfee Virus Scan, which runs on
startup. On hers, mcshield.exe takes up between 7-10% of processor
use at all times, causing the sluggishness. On mine it does not, even
though both of us have Virus Scan running all the time. Any
suggestions as to why it slows up hers, but not mine?

Different hardware. Perhaps also her computer has more to scan or is setup
to scan all files rather than certian types.
