McAfee Viruscan and Hotfix 811493 (MS03-013)

One of my customers just purchased McAfee Viruscan 8.0
and, when he reported to McAfee that his XPpro (SP1)
system slowed down significantly due to "real-time
scanning", he was told by McAfee to remove Hotfix 811493
(MS03-013). Sure enough this was supported by MS KB
Article 819634

BUT ...

when this did not solve the problem, he was told by
McAfee to remove ALL winXP hotfixes - that was the only
way he could solve this problem.

Until now, I have never heard anyone suggesting that ALL
hotfixes be removed. Can anyone (esp. MVP or MS)
substantiate this recommendation from McAfee?

Thanks,
Cinderbloke

Remove all hotfixes and leave the computer vulnerable to all the
problems previously fixed.
That is BAD advice.
He could call back for a second opinion.
If the second opinion says the same thing, ask for a web reference.
Surely such drastic action would be supported on McAfee website.
If the tech can not give reference, immediately ask for a supervisor
and voice a complaint about the very dangerous advice given.

There were some issues with that patch when initially released,
however the patch was revised and the issues are no longer there.

Reboot, disable all unnecessary applications including anti virus
before installing this or any other patch.

Jupiters advice is sound (as always <G>)

Do NOT remove all the updates on the machine. I would recommend calling
them again as well and making sure that its not the engine that the user
needs to update. The problem with MS03-013 was fixed a few months ago and
we have had no issues since for the most part. Disable AV before installing
the updates and you should be fine.
