McAfee removal ?

H

Henry Kolesnik

My ISP, SBC now part of ATT recommended that I download their version of
McAfee to protect my PC. Since I made the download and installed it,
my PC with XP has turned into a slug, the performance has been degraded
to being unacceptable. Several years ago I had a similar bad experience
with McAfee and forgot about it. It was nearly impossible to completely
remove it.
Now I'm afraid I may be in the same position. I've Googled for McAfee
Removal and found nearly 300,000 items, many recommending the McAfee
removal tool.
As you might suspect I don't trust them.
So what should I do? Use the XP software removal tool, try to Restore
to a date before McAfee or what?
Any opinions on Avast or AVG appreciated.
Thanks
Hank

McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool:

Personally, I wouldn't have anything from McAfee or Norton on any machine of
mine.

AVG is good as is Avast which I use. Neither are resource hogs either.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0

Do a custom installation and opt out of e-mail scanning.

Avast:

In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.

I like Revo Uninstaller. It deep scans the registry after it runs the
built-in uninstaller.

For my personal choice of AV I use Avira AntiVir (free). It's light on system
resources and boasts one of the best detection rates.
