McAfee and scanning shared drives

Hello. I am using McAfee (see below for any critics!) Virusscan 9 and have a
challenge when configuring it's scheduled scanning. I want it only to scan
local drives, by default it scans everything. Including the shared drives
from another computer and my "X drive"...it was still merrily checking that
when I woke up this morning

I tried McAfee technical support and according to them, you need to
disconnect the network drives first, which I can do...but it's just a little
more pain.

Has anyone found a neat solution that will work? It's a vain hope I know!

I also use Kaspersky on another PC and I thought that could be configured in
this way, but taking a quick look this morning and it seems to do the
same....

Defensive statement: I know there is a huge debate on which vendor. I
installed McAfee in October on a new PC to compare with Kaspersky I have
been using. It seems to doa fine job...I have also tried AVG and Norton and
for now McAfee is the chosen product, after it's yearly subscription runs
out, I may just try something else!!

Can't help with your problem I'm afraid but you may be able to help me. My
father has installed McAfee and I want to know how I can be sure he didn't
mess up. Does it scan incoming e-mails automatically and do I get any
indication at all that it does this? I would have expected to see a "fake"
POP3 server (i.e. McAfee) on his machine and Outlook Express connecting via
that, but I don't see any evidence.

BTW, Norton has a "scan only local drives" option - but please don't take

Unfortunately I am not an expert on McAfee's e-mail scanner - I tend to use
web based e-mail, thinking their integrated scanning protection will keep me
safe. However, I checked my installed and the option is enabled and it seems
to work! I downloaded some mail from my ISP account using Outlook Express
and by chance one of them was virus laden:

The attachment "MoreInfo.pif.aq" is infected with the W32/Bagle.j@MM
Virus(es).
This attachment has been deleted to complete the clean process.

My account settings are "normal" i.e. the standard SMTP/POP settings for my
ISP. There are no localhost settings, I have seen that before, I think with
Norton?

So, I suspect that your father's installation went OK. One of the reasons I
started to use McAfee is that I have installed it on my parents machine.
Nothing to do with how effectively it may or may not work, but its by far
the simplest to configure - few tabs and selections to get wrong. I think
they would have panicked with something like Kaspersky.

Thanks for the note on Norton, I have used it in the past and must have
remembed it's "scan local drives" selection.
