I discovered that I could switch the Start Menu (Programs Menu) to "Classic"
just like the older Windows versions. The Start Menu was one of the Vista
features I disliked the most....I really like Vista with the Classic Menu.

I did something similar with Office 2007. I downloaded a plug-in that
brought back the menus that Microsoft took away. I really like Office 2007
with the Menus back...

No, not really.
I'd describe you as resourceful and persevering in getting what you want.
IOW, the opposite of a loser! :-)

The classic start menu is faster in use. I wouldn't use anything else.

you are not old fashioned..

the new start menu is horrible in that the menus do not cascade.
Cascading menus believe it or not speeds up the finding and launching of
programs
as long as it is tidy and not too big.
Instead of microsoft making a way to keep the menu tidy, perhaps by buying
this person out and making a wizard in vista www.tidystartmenu.com
They did the unthinkable: the made the start menu collapse upon itself (the
way it is now) forcing you to either lose time clicking on menus to find
what you want, or using the keyboard to search the launch program, something
that many users that are more mouse users absolutly hate.

I wont start about the office toolbars, ribbon.. its one of the stupidest UI
designs I have ever seen. They should have had a fall-back menu
system-toolbar on office2007

I have the plugin too.. but there are thousands upon thousands that
absolutly hate the ribbon with good reason.... its slower to find what you
want!

Of course I have adapted to the new way of the ribbon.. but many people are
not as flexible as I.

Look at Frank for example.. he is not flexible.. he is used to following
blindly whatever MS tells him. He cannot stop and think for himself.. that
would need flexibility that he clearly lacks.

I must add:
why am I complaining about the new vista start menu since there is the
classic menu to fall back on if you want?

1)if you have classic you lose the helpful links and folders the XP menu had
2)Lots of people barley know what they are doing and will not even
understand how to switch styles of menus
3)the classic of vista has sever horrible things
a) when you switch it on, it throws on the desktop various system icons
without asking you
b)It has a stupid BUG: when you place folders or links directly on top of
the programs menu it adds a mysterious folder on the desktop that cannot be
deleted even if you remove the links from the start menu!

SOLUTION: Vista should have had 3 menu options. Classic, Xp style, and Vista
crappy style

or better yet there should have never been the vista style at all!

barley is an adverb?
I thought it was an ingredient in beer.

vista has sever horrible things?
what is that...did vista attack your cats or something?

Thanks for clearing that up. Your just a clueless pompous blowhard that
makes things up as you go along and have no facts to base anything on.

Your Welcome.
Glad I could help.

I must be, too. I also use the classic menu in Vista. I'm still running
Office 2003, so I haven't had to do surgery on the latest version.

Now if you move away from Monkeys and towards Sheep, you will be better
received here in the Vista group. Just FYI.

You can pretend that the problem is that some of us are averse to change, but
you would be wrong.
"i eat vista" had a point several posts back but the information was lost in
a bunch of noise about his spelling and punctuation.

Some of us like to know where we put things and like to have things stay the
same from one run to the next. Microsoft's focus groups must all be 20
somethings who have good memories and little experience. Of course they will
approve of artistic renderings on their screens because they aren't as
interested in their jobs as in their pretentions.

I have found a couple of bugs in the display but Microsoft has fixed them
(while I wasn't looking) so I'm not as upset as I was.

The fact that those bugs were still in the code at this late date upsets me
no end. The fact that MS seems to go out of its way to avoid feedback on
these bugs, ditto.
Start Internet Explorer, click the "Help" icon and then click "Feedback."
What do you see that has to do with feedback? Precious little.

As to switching to Linux or whatever, yep, I'll be doing that in the future.
After this experience I have vowed never to buy another MS product. Forever
and ever, Amen.
