Maxtor usb drive no show in Explorer, why?

My USB 2.0 Maxtor installs correctly just as soon as I plug it in. Device
Manager says it is working properly. In Computer Management, the Maxtor
external drive is listed as being in Location 0 but says it is working
properly. The Safely Remove Hardware icon displays in the systray, which
means the computer is detecting it. However, this drive will not show up in
Explorer. Any ideas?

Use computer management to partition and format it.

The drive has to be partitioned in a normal system.
I had the same problem. Once I partitioned the drive on an in-system IDE
controller, it was fine, and I can now format and use it over the USB
connection.

The drive has been working fine for a week or two now. I have a ton of
backup material on it and I am trying to get the material off of it that I
really need. It just started now that I had this problem with the Maxtor. If
I format the Maxtor, I am going to lose all the data on it.

Then go to device manager and delete ALL the USB devices and
do a fresh install. Or take the drive out of the case and
install it as a slave on your IDE cable.

Ooops. When I reformatted the main hard drive I accidentally deleted the
partition that the external USB Maxtor was on. I just learned a very
valuable lesson. It turns out you guys were right afterall because I killed
my external USB without realizing it when I deleted that partition. That is
why it is not showing up in Explorer. I will have to reformat it now to get
it to work again.
