Maxtor or WD USB for backup

L

louise

I'm getting a new computer with a 120gig drive. I'm
planning to use a USB 2.0 external hard drive for backup,
probably with Dantz. I figure something along the lines of
250 gig would be plenty large enough.

Maxtors are generally less expensive - but are Western
Digitals more reliable? Or other suggestions?

TIA

Hi,
I guess feedback will differ. I myself prefer Western-Digital over MAXTOR,
because in my personal experience I had problems with MAXTOR's becoming
faulty. Others will probably say the same thing, but the other way around
(Prefer MAXTOR over W.D).

If you've been working with PCs long enough you will have had problems with
every brand becoming faulty including pre-Seagate CDC.

Definitely. It is not about whether they fail. It is about how and how
frequent they fail. I have had 2 shock-induced and two other failures
with Maxtor so far. Given that I have about 40 of them running at the
moment I consider this quite reliable.

Cooling is the biggest issue with external enclosures.
Then, as I understand it, that would lead me to look again
at the Seagate. What do you think?

Group,
I have 70 Maxtors to deal with.Over a two year span 8 have failed.I had
ghost images so no big deal.Maxtor RMA is easy to deal with, and they have
always quickly and easily replaced the faulty drives.(except for a time that
the demanded a "trouble code",that was a pita.Thank god they dropped
that),Adysthemic

From my experience with Seagate: yes. They need less cooling than
Maxtor. Reliability should be comparable.
