Maxtor HD - ECC circuitry error

A

Andre Majorel

My old pal Maxtor 6Y200P0 (200-GB IDE hard drive) showed me a
new failure mode yesterday. About thirty minutes after power-on :

22:13:31 hdc: dma_intr: status=0x71
{ DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete Error }
22:13:31 hdc: dma_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
22:13:31 hdc: DMA disabled
22:13:31 hdd: DMA disabled
22:13:31 ide1: reset: master: ECC circuitry error
22:13:31 hdc: set_multmode: status=0x71
{ DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete Error }
22:13:31 hdc: set_multmode: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
22:13:31 hdc: recal_intr: status=0x71
{ DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete Error }
22:13:31 hdc: recal_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
22:13:31 ide1: reset: master: ECC circuitry error
22:13:31 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 243825784
...
22:15:12 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 243793976
22:18:13 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312481408
22:18:13 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312475760
22:18:17 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 0
22:18:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312475800
22:18:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312999936
22:18:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 80
22:18:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312475648
22:18:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:12 (hdc), sector 312475656
...

By that time, it was too late for smartctl. smartctl -a /dev/hdc
wouldn't even identify the drive.

After cycling the power, hdc worked fine again. smartctl didn't reveal
anything out of the ordinary (report follows).

Is anybody familiar with that "ECC circuitry error" ? Is it just
a glitch, or a sign of impending death ?

I think that error should be taken with a shovel of salt.
A diskdrive usually does not report circuitry failure.
They probably mean Interface CRC (ICRC) error,
also known as UDMA_CRC_Error_Count with S.M.A.R.T.

On the other hand you do have a lot of bad sectors
and even more corrected reads.
Is it just a glitch, or a sign of impending death ?

Or just a bad interface connection.
But since there are also bad sectors, better check the power
supply and temperature.
