For instance, Excel falls over at 65572 rows, what are the
stats for Access 2000?

Look up Access Specifications in the help file.
 
Type "specification" in Access Help index and you get all sort of limits for
Access.

There is no limit on number of Records per Table but there is a size limit
of 2 GB per mdb. However, I look for an upgrade path (to MS-SQL Server)
well before the above limit.
