Maximum Memory - CPU Related?

Dumb question (apparently, since I didn't find anyone else asking it
:)

I have an AMD 1800+ CPU on an older main board which has a maximum of 1

GB. I find a few less old SocketA MBs with capacity for 2 GB. If I
put it there, is it safe to assume that that processor can access the 2

GB?


I can't find any maximum addressable RAM information on AMD's web site,

nor on Google... The implication being that if the memory is there, it

will find it.


Related question: I see where the processor doc (at AMD) specifies a
maximum FSB of 266 mhz; do I therefore not get any value out of going
to 333 DDR (PC2700)? Should I just stick with PC2100? MUST I stick
with PC2100?


Any thoughts?

yes.

The Athlon can address much more memory than what is available in hardware.

The amount of memory that is useable is primarily limited by the
chipset, the BIOS and the mainboard (number of memory sockets), not
really by the CPU.
