Still confused about CPU FSB & Memory Spd.

I am still confused about the correct relationship between CPU FSB speed,
Memory Frequency and Motherboard FSB. I have heard that your CPU FSB should
match your Memory Frequency. My P4 CPU has 533 FSB but I don’t know the
formula to figure out what Memory I should use. I understand the concept
about the way DDR Memory is labeled. Example: PC2700 is 333MHz (166 x 2 =
332). So how does 333 get matched to 533? Or can the MB only effectively
use a PC2100/266 memory? 266 x 2 = 532 so that seems to work out, except
that raises the question of why the MB memory banks can take up to PC2700
memory when the MB FSB is only rated at a max of 533MHz (which would require
the use a maximum of PC2100 memory)? Putting in PC2700 memory would be a
waist… right?

For example:
Pentium4 2.4 gig CPU with 533 FSB
Motherboard with 533 FSB and PC2700/2100/1600 DDR support.
The maximum type of memory you should install is what? 2700 (333MHz),
PC2100 (266MHz)?

Thanks for the help.

Use the PC2700 if your board supports it.. My board's FSB is 533 w/p4 cpu 2.4
gb and I use 2x 512mb sticks of PC2700 DDR mem with no problems.. What mobo
do you have?

Ask elsewhere please. Your questions have nothing to do with XP and
hardware.

Well, you're right NobodyMan. This isn't a hardware question that is
directly related to WinXP but I didn't think anyone would mind. I guess I
was wrong. Most of the folks that help in these forums are very helpful and
decent. I guess there always has to be an exception or two.
