When I click the button for the window to maximize isn't there a button
(F8?) I can hold down while doing this so it always opens maximized?

You do not click the maximize button.
If you open the application using the .exe file, once open:
Place your pointer on a corner of the open window and move it either
inwards or outwards so it becomes a double pointer on the corner.
Once it's a double corner press and hold down the right mouse button.
Drag the Windows corner to a corner on the monitor screen and release the
mouse button.
Do the same for the Windows opposite corner.
Once the Window is dragged to fill the screen, press/hold down the CTRL key
and click the Close (X) button for the Window.
The size you dragged it too should now be remembered on each successive
opening of the app.

If you are opening the app using a shortcut:
Right click the shortcut icon.
Click Properties > Shortcut tab.
Click the dropdown arrow in the box labeled Run.
Select Maximized and click Apply > Ok.
The app will always open maximized from this point on.
