When I click the button for the window to maximize isn't there a button
(F8?) I can hold down while doing this so it always opens maximized?

To view a window full screen, hold down the Ctrl key and
double-click the window's title bar-or when the window
is active, press the F11 key at the top of your keyboard to
get the biggest window possible.

Open the window, make sure it's the only one open, then drag the edges
to expand it as full as possible. Close it by choosing File | Close.
It should open full size next time.
