Max Payne can't load to the menu screen

Kai Hawatari

Hey all. I had this thread going somewhere else but it's
vanished now -_-.

Anyway, I've determined that I have no spyware, no viruses
and a near brand-new, high-end computer.

I've installed Max Payne (full install) with no problems.
I start it up and the opening movie runs. Next it goes to
the loading screen before the main menu opens. The loading
screen finishes (red bar at 100%) but the menu screen
never appears. It just stays on the loading screen. I can
hear the BG music but no other indication of the menu
screen.

This is AFTER installing the latest patch (upgrading from
the original 1.0 version). Before I updated I could get to
the menu screen, but during the loading of the first
level, the game would exit quickly back to the desktop.

I have all the latest drivers for my motherboard, video
card, sound card etc etc.

I really can't see what else it could be... Any
suggestions?

Have you tried reinstalling the game from scratch? The
behaviour pre-patch seems pretty typical, but post patch
I had no proble,ms. that would be my first thing to try
anyway.

Having said that though. more infomation regarding your
set-up would be helpful. I have had ganes that locked up
due to the fact that when the game first started it
wasn't causing too much stress but further in to the game
the power drain on my M/B was too much to cope with and
the system crashed to desktop. there are many things that
can go wrong is what I am trying to say. If you give as
much info as you can it helps out a lot when tracking
down the real issue.

Hello,
Sounds similar to my issue. I installed the full version
of Max Payne and played the tutorial without and
problems. As soon as I select "New Game" it says loading
at the bottom of my screen and then all that displays is
my XP desktop. It continues to display "loading" but
nothing happens. I have a brand new pc running XP Pro,
80GB HD, AMD Athlon 2500+, Radeon 9600 w/ DirectX 9.0.
I've installed/uninstalled the game several times but the
tutorial works and the game itself does not??? I've got
to the Max Payne website and read through the support
pages. I feel I have all the required specs. I'll try the
patch again but I did find this interesting while reading
through the Read Me file under Support OS's:

"Although Max Payne has been found to work on Windows XP,
it has not been thoroughly tested and thus Windows XP is
not officially supported. Additionally, Windows NT is not
supported."

Also, while uninstalling the game I started
getting "Locked File Detected". Click Reboot, Retry,
Ignore or Cancel. Worst of all my pc will not Restart. It
literally shuts down when select "Restart". This has been
really disappointing since I'm not much of a gamer! I was
really looking forward to this game!

Well, it certainly isn't my comp's hardware specs. I've
got a near-new machine w/ 2500+MHz AMD Barton, 512mb ram,
A7N8X-X Asus motherboard, 80gig and 20gig hard drives.

I'm on DX9.0b as well. I can also play Metal Gear Solid 2
for PC on the highest res (1280x1024) with no slowdown.
Same with Battlefield 1942. Judging by that, I SHOULD be
able to run Max Payne fine.

Well, by a weird chance I may have found a solution. I was
testing Max Payne. It finished loading the menu screen
but, as usual, didn't show up. I had MSN open in the bg so
I ctrl-tabbed to get back to them. When I returned the
menu screen had loaded. The levels also seem to load
properly now. It must be an error in the screen refreshing
code or something of the like.

Sorry that that's all it was guys... I think it's
manageable now.

Thanx for the help!

I just installed Call of Duty - no problems at all! Must
be an XP/Max Payne compatability issue. I emailed support
and here is the response. I think I'm just gonna return
the game. Too much of a headache!

To perform a more detailed examination of your PC and the
problem
you´re having, we require some more information about your
computer. We will
need to get two files, called DXDIAG.TXT and MSINFO32.NFO,
to help
check for any potential problems with the program and your
system.

Please answer the following questions in an e-mail, attach
the two data
files to it, then send it to us.

What is the full name of the program: ?
What is the operating system for your computer?
Does the title have the name globalstar anywhere on it: ?
What is the detailed problem with the program: ?
What is the complete detailed error message: ?
How long have you had the program: ?

It will also help us if you can send to us any and all
screenshots of
the error message along with the both DXDIAG & MSINFO32
data files.
Please note that these system files are not on your system
normally. You
have to create them manually and send them to us by
following the
instructions below to help us diagnose what the issue may
be.

To create a DXDIAG -> Click Start -> Run. Erase whatever
is in the box
and type in ´DXDIAG.´ RUN THE TESTS offered on the
Display tab and the
Sound tab. Click on ´Save All Information´ and save the
file to a place
that you can find it later (the Windows Desktop is a good
place).
Attach it to an email, and send it back to us with
MSINFO32 shown below.

To create a MSINFO32: There are instructions particular
to the
operating system you are using.

FOR WINDOWS XP USERS:
Put the game or program CD into the CD-ROM drive then do
the following
below...
--Click Start, and then click Run.
--In the Open box, type ´MSINFO32´ without the quotes and
then click
OK.
--This will bring up the Microsoft System Information
window.
--Click on File, then choose "Save..."
--Where it says ´File name´ type in "MSINFO32," and on the
top where it
says "Save In...". Make sure it says ´Desktop´. Change
the "Save as
File Type" entry to "5.0/6.0 System Information File."
You can change
this by clicking on the drop-down menu by the "Save as
File Type"
message.
Now click on "Save."
--Reply back to this e-mail with the DXDIAG.TXT and
MSINFO32.NFO file
as attachments along with a description of the complete
problem you are
having with the program. For those of you with slower
connection
speeds, you may wish to compress these files into a single
archive, such as
a ZIP or RAR file, to quicken your e-mail transfer.

Please send us both files, as well as a short description
of your
problem, and in a short time we will inform you of our
research after
examining your system files.

Hi Chris,

It's your choice of course, but it's not unusual to request
system information that way so the techs know what type
of system their dealing with. I would give their support an
honest try before giving up on the game. They might even
have a patch for specific systems. Good luck Chris! :)
