Black screen on boot

Ok, I was rebuilding my computer. New mother board, CPU, Video card,
but I moved all my drives over.

When I tried to boot the system, it gave me a fatal system error and
wouldn't come up. Turns out I needed IT8211 drivers for Windows to
access the HD on the new MB. I made a driver disk from the CD that
came with my MB, ran XP setup, repaired my old install including the
new drivers. Setup finished successfully, when the machine rebooted it
made it to the XP splash screen, which is farther than it had gotten
before. After the screen vanished, however, the screen remained blank.
No welcome window, no login box, nothing. It sounded like the HD was
still working so I let it run for about 15 minutes, with no change. I
restarted and chose safe mode boot this time. The list of loading
files scrolled up the screen, but when it appeared to be finished,
nothing else happened. The screen stayed there, nothing loading,
nothing running.

Any ideas?

Boy, am I embarrased. In the time it took for me to write up that
post, it appears _something_ clicked and it's working again.
