Max memory in XP Pro 32bits

Hi People...How is the max memory who can manage Windows XP X86?

4 GB of addressable memory, which after I/O, BIOS, Video, etc, it comes to
about 3.2 GB of usable system RAM.
 
XP can manage 4GB but the BIOS may make less available. It varies depending
on the BIOS from about 2.8 to 3.5GB. It is the BIO that determines this,
not Windows.

Well, yes and no. This article applies to WinXP as well:

Since the 64-bit Windows *may* take advantage of the RAM installed, this
is not a BIOS issue in general.
 
Windows x64 will still not show all ram if the max supported is installed.
If you have the max of 128GB you will only see 127GB. It is just that you
won't see the effect on consumer mobos that only support a max of 8GB
anyway.

In any case, Vista x86 SP1 does show the full amount of ram installed. MS
simply changed what was being reported. With XP you will still continue to
see only the memory available to user programs even with SP3.

It is more what is being reported than anything else.

According to the subject line, the OP was referring to a 32-bit Windows
and my reply was absolutely correct. Your comment (quote)

is simply false because 64-bit Windows may use more than that limit and
therefore, it *depends* on Windows - period.
 
The BIOS hides ram it is using for hardware buffering from user programs.
With XP what is reported on the System Properties page is the ram available
for user programs, not the installed ram. This is strictly a matter of what
MS decided to report on the System Propties page and has nothing to do with
what Windows actually knows about. MS could easily change what is being
reported in XP as they have in Vista x86. Even if they did it would not
make any difference to the user. It requires changes in the BIOS to change
how much is available to user programs.

The address range for hardware buffering is the high end of the operating
system's addressing range. With a 32 bit OS that means roughly the top gig
of 4GB. But this does not become apparent until all 4GB are installed.
With a 64 bit OS that top gig is not reached until 128GB is installed and
until then no "shortage" is noticed.

More or less correct. If there is a RAMdisk installed, Win9x reported
the remaining RAM only in contrast to WinXP.
This is strictly a matter of what MS decided to report on the System
Propties page and has nothing to do with what Windows actually knows
about.

Reports usually base on facts Windows knows about.
MS could easily change what is being reported in XP as they have in
Vista x86.

KB929605 is about Vista. Since Vista x86 SP1 now reports 4GB when 4GB is
installed it appears you drew the wrong conclusions.
 
BIOS has nothing whatsoever to do with maximum storage. It is hardware
architecture. Example:
Those devices using DMA (direct memory access) preclude windows from using
those memory locations.

I think DMA and memory mapped IO are two different things. DMA involves
your RAM, MMIO doesn't

It's the hardware really. The BIOS will allocate as much address space
as is necessary to address video RAM, itself (the BIOS) whatever other
PCIx resources need address space.
